Cellular energy breakdown feels defeatist. Whatever your chronological age, you know you are meant to feel energetic. However, when your mitochondrial ATP production is inefficient, you always feel fatigued. You fall asleep at your desk. And then, frustratingly, you likely struggle to fall asleep for what seems like hours at night. You wake feeling like you have hit a brickwall. And you just spent 9 hours in bed. It is called “sleeping into exhaustion”. More time in bed attempting to sleep is NOT better. It is a sign of mitochondrial dysfunction.
And when you are exhausted, you tend to put less emphasis on a healthy diet (too tired to care), exercise (definitely no energy to do this) or take care of your emotional health. So you begin to neglect all the pieces of the puzzle that make up cellular health: cognitive health, physical health and emotional health.
Your mitochondria are the batteries of your cells. However, when they feel danger, they can go into hiding, it is called cell danger response and you don’t make as much energy as you require.
When cells perceive ongoing stress that may originate from an infection or toxic burden or inflammation, they shift into a protective state known as the Cell Danger Response. In this state, energy production, detoxification, and normal cellular communication are disrupted until the threat is resolved.
Clare Kelway’s story: this is exactly what happened to Clare. She experienced cell danger response (not that it had been documented at the time of her Chronic Fatigue, but she realized that rest, sleep, whole food, slow movement and therapies were the solution to her challenges and involved neuro and quantum biofeedback therapies, homeopathy, acupuncture, sunshine and exercise. Eventually her nervous system regulated and felt safe enough for her to feel whole again. But it took years of experiments to figure out what was really going on. Much of her challenges had their root causes in her childhood and early adulthood.
We look at how your body is producing energy. Because your mitochondria—the energy engines inside your cells—are constantly responding to your internal and external environments.
And when that environment is disrupted, energy production slows, detoxification becomes inefficient, and cognitive function suffers. We will ask you to undertake a functional genomics analysis of your microbiome that helps us understand how your mitochondrial energy is affected by the keystone components of your microbiome. We may also do metabolomics testing to determine how your Kreb cycle and electron transport chain is producing ATP.
We start the journey by getting to know you. We will review the influence of your nervous system on cellular function. This encompasses a lot of different moving parts.
We will review your biological systems and health history to date. We don’t do physical examinations because we are not medical doctors, but we do call for several labs and if we review that there is need for specific diagnostics, we will ask you to work with your medical team to get the right work up. We aren’t shy about working with medical doctors who are willing to collaborate with us, we just don’t prescribe ourselves, and we do not diagnose, treat or cure any disease! If you are on prescription medications, we ask you to work with your medical team to adjust or eradicate these as your health improves. We work with you as an integrated whole which is clearly missing when you are fatigued and suffering from cognitive challenges. You may present with a medical diagnosis, and while we likely have experience in what may be involved in that diagnosis, we don’t work with any diseases, we work with YOU, your identity, your mind, your emotions and your physical body. If we assess that we aren’t a good fit for you, we will let you know. Health transformation is a collaborative partnership and involves a lot of effort both on our part and yours. If you are not willing to do the work and you are not coachable, then we may not be the right fit for you.
