Functional Medicine Weight Loss

No more yo:yo dieting – get to the root causes of your weight gain. Is it hormone imbalances, gut health issues and/or metabolic syndrome? Metabolix Health will work with you to determine the underlying root causes, design a health transformation program for you and help you regain your youthful appearance.

Underlying Causes of Weight Gain

Age and Genetics

As we age, our metabolism naturally slows down. If we continue to eat the same amount of food, we will likely consistently gain weight.

Genetics can affect hunger signals, detox pathway issues, predisposition to gaining weight, fat distribution, and using food to deal with stress.

Hormone imbalances

  • Low Thyroid function

Your thyroid is your metabolism gland. Low thyroid is a key reason for people to gain weight over time.  And unless you get your thyroid tested (functionally, not just TSH and T4 marker), you may not be aware that your thyroid isn’t functionally optimally.

  • Sex Hormone balance

If out of balance, testosterone, progesterone, and estrogens will absolutely affect your ability to gain or lose weight.

Gut and Digestive Issues

  • Constipation

If you suffer from consistent constipation, you are likely to be holding onto unwanted toxins, and therefore weight. Constipation can be connected to several other factors to be considered.

  • Heartburn/reflux

Stomach issues can prevent you from digesting protein which can cause a build up of toxins and associated weight.

  • SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth)

SIBO is associated with gas, bloating, and a distended abdomen. SIBO is usually accompanied by other factors listed here. It doesn’t usually occur in isolation.

  • S IgA levels

Low S IgA levels are associated with weight issues and chronic stress.

  • Infections and dysbiosis

Leptin and ghrelin are two hormones that regulate hunger and are impacted by the gut microbiome. Studies show that dysbiosis can increase calorie intake, weight gain, and obesity.

Chronic Inflammation

Inflammation can cause hormone imbalances, gut imbalances, and metabolic issues associated with weight gain.

Diet and Lifestyle Factors

Certain foods such as gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, grains, and nightshades can cause people to trip up with their weight and metabolism.  You may suffer from allergies or intolerances, causing you to retain weight.

Sitting at a desk all day can harm your health and waistline.

  • Lack of Exercise

Being lazy and not participating in consistent daily exercise will negatively impact your waistline.

  • Stress Management

It is well known that many people stress eat. They seek out comfort foods (likely to be sugary and high in carbohydrates) when stressed out.   Also, raised cortisol due to stress will aid weight gain, so stress is a multi-factor reason for issues with weight gain.

  • Macronutrient ratios

Not eating the optimal macro-nutrient ratios for your bio-individual needs. No one plan fits everyone.

  • Lack of awareness

You may be completely unaware of how much food you are eating and what these foods’ effects are on your unique metabolism.

All these factors contribute to weight loss resistance.  Functional Medicine excels at considering every factor for your overall health and weight loss.

Long Term Weight Loss Success

Lifestyle factors are fundamental to long-term weight loss success.

Mindset, Habits, and Behavior Modifications

A growth mindset is vital for long term health rejuvenation.

Habits are difficult to change so hiring a coach to help you change habits is vital for your success.

Behavior modification can significantly impact your desired results, such as when to eat, what to eat, and how to eat (slow down and chew your food).

Switching from eating out in restaurants to learning to cook at home with fresh ingredients so you can control your food and, therefore, the biochemical impact on your body.

Balancing blood sugar and insulin for effective communication can reduce resistance to toxic build-up and weight loss.

Antioxidants can reduce oxidative stress (cellular rust) and aging.

Nutrient support and balanced nutrition is clearly vital for your long term weight loss success.

Very often we discover that our clients are eating too little, exercising too much and just living on cortisol-inducing stress. This is why they can’t lose weight. So we help them to examine their lives and switch lifestyle patterns for less stress and greater outcomes.
